                 NATIONAL CENTER FOR HEALTH STATICS

As the nation's principal health statistics agency, we  have to compile statistical information to guide actions and policies to improve the health of the population. We are a unique public resource for health information—a critical element of public health and health policy.

The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) is a principal agency  which provides statistical information to guide actions and policies to improve the Public health of the American people. NCHS is one of the principal statistical agencies in the federal government. NCHS is a part of the  Centers  for Diseasr Control And Prevention (CDC).

National Centre for Health Statistics (NCHS) reference, also known as NCHS/ WHO International Growth Reference, was recommended three decades ago by WHO [19]. The NCHS reference was based on data on longitudinal study of children of European ancestry from a single community in the United States which was collected between 1929 and 1975 [20]. These children were measured every three months. Majority of these infants were fed artificial milk. The limitation of NCHS was that the measurement was not adequate to describe the rapid and changing rate of growth in early infancy. Additionally, there were shortcomings inherent in the statistical methods available and used.

As the nation’s principal health statistics agency, The compile statistical information to guide actions and policies to improve the health of the population. They are a unique public resource for health information—a critical element of public health and health policy.

The  health statistics allow us to

  • Identify disparities in health status and use of health care services by race or ethnicity, socioeconomic status, region, and other population characteristics
  • Describe experiences with the health care system
  • Monitor trends in health status and health care delivery
  • Identify health problems
  • Support biomedical and health services research
  • Provide information for making changes in public policies and programs
  • Evaluate the impact of health policies and programs

Working with partners throughout the health community, use a variety of approaches to efficiently obtain information from the sources most able to provide information.  collect data from birth and death records, medical records, interview surveys, and through direct physical examinations and laboratory testing. NCHS is a key element of our national public health infrastructure, providing important surveillance information that helps identify and address critical health problems.

Here at NCHS, information is at the core of our mission, and our website is a vital part of our effort to make this information work for you. A site is designed to provide you with quick and easy access to the wide range of information and data available from us. Also include an overview of our major data collection activities, present our data findings, and provide information about special activities and initiatives to improve access to health statistics information.

The  (NCHS) of the  (CDC) releases a public-use vital statistics tape file for each data year. This file contains a data record of all deaths occurring annually in the United States. Each data record contains the underlying cause of death, other mentioned causes of death, and demographic data. The public-use tapes can be purchased from the National Technical Information Service or from the Government Printing Office.
